I'm 44, married, and a stay home dad. I love art, comics, films, and pop culture. I have a beautiful wife, and three great kids. Stumbling is my new-found passion.

Wow...one of my favorite covers of all time. Thor and the Silver Surfer, about to get it on!

SILVER SURFER #4 (1968)
JOHN BUSCEMA

This great cover by John Buscema encapsulates a whole era of comics in one bristling image. The magnificent figures of Thor and the Silver Surfer, frozen in time at the moment before contact, perfectly capture the delicious anticipation every kid experienced when his favorite heros were set to battle. Buscema's composition, simple and elegant, creates maximum speed and motion while giving us just enough information (the Rainbow Bridge, Asgard) to whet our curiosity for the story inside. Once again, the flat background of Asgardian Space forces attention on the tableau about to explode before our eyes. Power, motion, anticipation and action make this one of the great covers of the Silver Age.

CAPTAIN AMERICA #111 (1969)
JIM STERANKO

Of all the great covers Steranko produced during his tenure in comics (Shield #4, Strange Tales #161 &167), none exceed this one in elements of dynamism or design. While this image does not have much of the op-art influence of some of Steranko's other work during the period, it does exemplify his superior composition and fantastic drawing abilities. Jim keeps the secondary elements in the bottom half of the cover, so that the solid white background forces focus on the central image of Captain America, arm upraised in a posture of triumph and defiance. Here, Steranko has successfully combined the portrait cover (Cap in all his muscle-rippling glory), and the story cover (Bucky and the hordes of Hydra bedeviling the Star Spangled Avenger) in one supreme image.
